💡 Why Do You Need This Calculator?

The Atal Pension Yojana (APY) was launched by the Government of India to provide a universal social security system, specifically aimed at empowering workers in the unorganized sector. However, any citizen aged 18 to 40 can participate. You need the APY Calculator to understand exactly how this defined-benefit scheme fits into your broader retirement portfolio.

Unlike market-linked investments where returns fluctuate wildly, APY guarantees a fixed monthly pension ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 backed by the sovereign state. You need this tool to determine the exact monthly premium you must commit to based on your current entry age. Historically, fixed pensions provided immense peace of mind, and this calculator helps you secure exactly that. Furthermore, the tool allows you to simulate a parallel lumpsum investment in a safe instrument like a Fixed Deposit. You need this feature to see how you can effortlessly supplement your guaranteed APY base pension with additional liquid wealth by the time you reach age 60.

📖 How to Use & Calculation Guide

Atal Pension Yojana (APY)

How to use: Select your current age (must be between 18 and 40) and choose the guaranteed monthly pension amount you desire upon reaching age 60. The system will display the exact monthly premium you need to pay until you turn 60. You can optionally add a "Parallel Lumpsum" to see how side investments in fixed deposits can augment your retirement wealth.

Calculation Details: APY is a defined benefit scheme, meaning payouts are not directly linked to market performance. Calculations are based on government-defined actuarial tables for entry ages 18-40. The app approximates the required premium to achieve the fixed target corpus needed to guarantee your selected monthly pension. The "Return of Corpus" represents the predefined fixed amount that will be returned to your nominee.

Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a flagship sovereign guaranteed pension scheme administered by PFRDA and targeted at unorganized sector workers and citizens. Any Indian citizen between the ages of 18 and 40 years holding a valid savings bank account is eligible to enroll, provided they are not income tax payers.

What pension tiers are available under APY?

Subscribers can choose guaranteed lifelong monthly pension amounts of ₹1,000, ₹2,000, ₹3,000, ₹4,000, or ₹5,000 per month starting from age 60 until death.

What is the new income taxpayer exclusion rule for APY?

Effective October 1, 2022, the Ministry of Finance amended APY rules such that any citizen who is or has been an income tax payer under the Income Tax Act, 1961 is strictly prohibited from opening a new APY account. Accounts opened prior to this date remain valid.

What happens to the accumulated corpus upon subscriber and spouse demise?

Upon subscriber demise, the monthly pension continues seamlessly to the surviving spouse for life. After the demise of both the subscriber and spouse, 100% of the predetermined accumulated pension corpus (₹1.7 Lakh for ₹1,000 pension up to ₹8.5 Lakh for ₹5,000 pension) is handed over to the legal nominee.

Why is joining APY at age 18 drastically cheaper than at age 40?

At age 18, securing a ₹5,000 monthly pension requires contributing only ₹210 per month for 42 years. At age 40, securing that same ₹5,000 pension requires contributing ₹1,454 per month for 20 years. Joining early reduces monthly cost by almost 85% thanks to compounding!

What happens if there is insufficient balance for auto-debit in my bank account?

Can I upgrade or downgrade my pension slab after joining?

Yes. Subscribers can upgrade or downgrade their target monthly pension slab once during any financial year during the month of April by submitting a request to their bank.

Does the Government of India guarantee the APY pension?
